Tandem Farm Company is run by a young husband and wife team, who are trying to produce chickens, eggs, lambs and pigs as humanely and responsibly as possible. They model their farm after Joel Salatin's methods and aim to celebrate the "pigginess of the pig".
Tandem Farm processes their animals at a local, animal welfare focused facility and sells then at farmers markets, through local buying clubs and direct to restaurants, keeping every dollar local. Their goal for 2016 is to increase sales and production to allow for the creation of good wage, on-farm jobs.
Type: Producer of pasture raised chicken, eggs, lamb and pork
Location: Driftwood, TX
Their Story: Tandem Farm Co. hit the pasture running in June 2014 on a small acreage tract outside of Driftwood, Texas, just 30 minutes from downtown Austin. Like many young farmers, they do not own the land on which they farm; instead the property is graciously provided by a dynamic local couple who shares a passion to change the current food system. Originally run by two couples, Tandem Farm Co. is now solely owned and operated by Jordan and Esther Bednar.
The Raise: The existing chicken houses are in need of replacement to provide better living conditions and more weather protection for the birds, while still allowing them to openly pasture.
Outcome: Tandem owner Jordan Bednar secured vendor financing from the hoop house supplier and AFI coordinated a straight line amortized loan, with initial four month grace period to allow them time to purchase and build the houses, then get one group of birds raised and sold before payments begin.
Funded: January 2016
